Hitech back on podium at Silverstone home race

Hitech wrap up home race with a P2 finish at Silverstone

Hitech found themselves back on the podium at Silverstone, as Juri Vips sealed a hard-fought second place in the opening race of the FIA Formula 2 weekend.

A solid result in Free Practice set the foundations for a good start to the home event for the Silverstone-based team. Vips sealed the timesheets in P3, Lawson in P9.

Setting the grid for Sunday’s Feature Race and the opening Sprint Race the following day, Vips was able to punch in a lap enough to slot into the top-10. He qualified P9, setting a best lap of 1:40.491. Lawson just missed out on reverse grid pole with a lap of 1:40.679, taking P11 as a red flag curtailed the running with just over two minutes to go.

Sprint Race 1 saw Estonian driver Vips clamber in front of the pack as the lights went off, in an expert defence to hold onto a podium after an intense 21-lap duel. Lawson settled with P7, collecting all-important points for the team.

The second Sprint Race was enough for Vips and Lawson to collect 10 points between them, finishing P5 and P6 respectively.

Sunday’s closing Feature Race was a tough one for the team, in a battle to maximise the pace with tyres degrading quickly in the sweltering heat. Vips finished P7, Lawson P11.

Leaving Silverstone, Vips is currently 5th in the championship standings with Lawson in 8th. Hitech are two points shy of third place in the team’s standings as they close off their home race weekend. The team will head to Monza, Italy in a few weeks time on 10-12 September for Round 5 of the FIA F2 Championship.
