Paul Aron’s excellent start to his rookie season in FIA Formula 2 continued this weekend as the championship got back down to business in Imola. Amaury Cordeel’s impressive performance in each session and race provided a clear indication that the team has made progress in all areas since the recent in-season test in Barcelona.
Paul consolidated a second place podium finish in Saturday’s Sprint Race with a further eight point haul from today’s Feature Race, in which he finished sixth.
He remains second overall in the drivers’ standings after Round 4 but crucially took a 10-point bite out of the current championship leader’s advantage, reducing the gap to just five points.
After topping Free Practice on Friday, Paul focused on optimising the set-up for the bumpy Imola track and the best overall strategy to secure crucial points. He finished second in the Sprint Race and collected 8 points.
Amaury qualified 10th, paving the way for a strong performance in the two races. He was in contention for the podium throughout the Sprint Race, ultimately finishing fourth and securing five points. A well-executed strategy to pit late in the Feature Race had looked to put him back on track in points contention but a problem with the right rear at the stop brought his race to a premature end with just four laps remaining.
Hitech GP are in third place in the teams’ standings, just seven points shy of the top of the leaderboard.
During the weekend, the team and drivers joined the touching tribute to Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger in the build-up to the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Their legacy still guides the direction of the sport and inspires the ambitions of today’s aspiring racers.
