Ahead of the restart of the 2020 race season – in which eight opening rounds have been confirmed so far – and with teams slowly re-emerging from the global lockdown, Hitech catches up with its Formula 2 driver Luca Ghiotto. The Italian made his debut in what was then called GP2 in 2016, and has six wins to his credit in the category.
The team will head to the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria on 3-5 July which marks the opening race on the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship calendar.
Hitech GP: What have you been up to during lockdown?
Luca: “I have been busy training at home and doing some simulator stuff (eSports). I have also been working for my family business. Obviously, we were on a very tight lockdown in Italy for some weeks and were confined to our homes (we couldn’t even leave the house to exercise for a while!), but I have been keeping busy helping my family with their RC car business, so it’s not been too bad!”
Hitech GP: What’s your pre-race ritual?
Luca: “I normally just take time to warm up, to get me physically fit for the race. Normally it’s about 20 minutes before getting in the car… nothing too crazy!”
Hitech GP: Greatest racing memory?
Luca: “Race 2 in Bahrain last year where I did a pit stop in the Sprint Race and won. There were lots of overtakes. That was probably the best race ever in my whole career.”
Hitech GP: Favourite driver
Luca: “Ayrton Senna, for sure! He’s one of my greatest idols.”
Hitech GP: What’s your life goal?
Luca: “It has always been to become a professional race driver. F1 would of course be the dream, but the main goal is to become professional and then we will see later how and where I can become a pro. Whether that’s in F1 or something else, I would be happy!”
Hitech GP: What would you be doing if you weren’t racing?
Luca: “I would probably be working for my family business who manufacture RC cars.”
