Hitech claimed a 1-2 finish at Mugello in Italy over the weekend, during Round 9 of the 2020 FIA F2 Championship. Mazepin scored his second FIA Formula 2 win of the season, from 14th on the grid in Saturday’s Feature Race at Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello. The Russian capped off a Hitech 1-2, with team mate Ghiotto securing second place on home soil in a dramatic hour-long race.
The Feature Race was turned on its head in the latter moments by a safety car intervention. Mazepin stormed to victory in the closing stages, passing his team mate at the front of the field as he headed around the Italian circuit on the alternate strategy. The Russian driver initially found himself in third place after the Safety Car, making use of fresh soft tyres which gave him an advantage as the majority of the grid were on heavily-degraded hard rubber.
Mazepin made light work of passing long-time race leader Lundgaard and team mate Ghiotto who was battling in second, storming across the line in first place in the closing moments of the Feature Race. Ghiotto had to settle for second after defending down to the wire, making it the team’s first FIA F2 one-two finish in their debut season.
In Sunday’s Sprint Race, Mazepin suffered contrasting fortunes, as he collided with teammate Ghiotto, ending the Italian’s race and earning himself a 10s time penalty to drop him down to P18.
The team will head to Sochi in Russia on 25 -27 September for the tenth round on the 2020 FIA Formula 2 calendar.
